THE VALUE OF CHILDREN ON THE FAMILYâ€™S ECONOMIC CONTRIBUTIONAT SLUM COMMUNITY CITIZEN

The imbalance development of infrastructure in the villages and cities becoming one of the factor that lead people to migrate to the cities which is consider as the area that can provide you with hopes to get a better life. However, the hopes of these newcomers of the cities often didn,t match with what happened to them in a real life because cities can,t completely fulfill all the newcomers to their job fields. Moreover, this thing will lead to a new creation of slum community at the cities. Slum community is a group of poor people that have their own sub-culture that different with the common culture that happened in the city. And that was the thing that exactly occurred with the slum community at Kampung Beting, Koja, North Jakarta. Every member of the family at this community holding their own roles which are supporting at each other for the sustainability of the family,s economic. Since a little, the children of the slum community have been introduced to work. Both the productive one that can give them money, and the non-productive such as housework. Related to those things, this research will discuss about the economical value of children on the slum,s families at Kampung Beting. This research uses constructivism paradigm with the qualitative approach and case study to obtain more deeper understanding. The main theory besides the functional structural theory is the social exchange theory that assumed if human are social creature which always want to chase of benefits in their every interactions with the others.The results of this research shows that children of the slum community at Kampung Beting, Koja, North Jakarta hold almost the same economical value with the productivities of adults in the same activities such scavenging, mengamen, and begging for money. Without distinguishing the age or sex, these children were included on their parents job, like mengamen and scavenging. In fact, some of these children are sold by their parents in order to getting economical value from them and getting money. The rewards from selling their children are varies, because they never put a definite price on their children when they were sold them to another family who needed. These are the form of economical value that come up related with the drastic change of social life like economical crisis.
